Density

Even if not always very evident, we like to see the different design scales – from cities to products – as related: the design of the bigger scale (cities) dictates the design of the smaller scales (buildings first and products next). Urban Density being one of the key factors in contemporary urban planning and urban design, will consequently determine the spaces we live and work in (buildings), as well as the way we live and work inside those spaces (products).

To look at products from this point of view, opens up an exciting working field: how urban density determines the products we use as well as its design. This justifies the research about new product typologies, as well as the reformulation of “old” ones generating new functional outcomes.

The interior of an airplane is one of the densest spaces there is. Space is not abundant, and we spend rather long periods of time in it. Ordinary Human actions, like eating, face a specific set of constraints inside of the airplane. However, airplane meals are served to us pretty much according to the same standards of any restaurant. MENU questions this aspect and proposes an alternative: a meal served and degusted vertically. It aims at a more logical use of the space available inside the airplane, and at the same time proposes a new (eating) experience to the user – something that you can only experience while flying!

Tea Light Holder

The tea light holder typology is illustrative of product density: it is produced in high numbers and is almost never bought as isolated units; it has high demands of storage, but none is satisfactory solving it. These were the design driving forces for this project. Solving storage was prioritized. Having achieved good storage, the challenge was to make this feature excel functionality. Through a hole opened on the bottom of the item, we got that. It stacks well for storage, and at the same time, because of the hole, stack ability became a functional catalyst: when 2 or 3 are staked together, the flame on the bottom one gets protected from the wind by the top ones, and it’s possible to use the item outdoors.
